Java chat issues in Safari

Hello everyone,
I've been a Mac person for a long time, and my whole life runs through an apple product of some kind, and while I was an apple sales rep for awhile, I'm not the most tech guy on the back end. Here's what's happened. I convinced my mother in Canada that she needed to get a mac, as she was having a **** of a time with her PC. After years of sitting on the fence, she jumped in with a mac mini and I was so proud. Trouble is, she hates it.
A very big part of what she uses the computer for is online chatting in her support groups, they all use Java, and she tells me that what's happening is that she won't see a message for a few minutes and then a hundred of them will stream in all at once. These lags or delays can't be a result of the connection, as when I was there in summer her bandwidth was huge, there is clearly just some issue with Java's chat and safari. I tried to get her to use Firefox and she says it was better, but is having the same problem.
She's frustrated to the point where she's talking about pulling the PC out of the Ewaste pile in the garage and hooking it back up.

I mean how hard can it be to get a 62 year old women on a chat page?

I'm in australia, and she's back in canada, but I can get any info anyone might need. These groups are support groups for parents who have lost children, her having lost my little brother at 19 only 3 years ago. They're very important to her, and I'd really appreicate if someone could help me get them back for her.

Keyboard windows-switching is wrong ...

Safari 4.0.3 that came with SL is frustrating me. Keyboard switching between open windows no longer moves between windows in their order opened. Instead the order depends on when window content was up-dated, it seems. I use many multi-tabbed windows for process monitoring and now have to very very much more switch windows to find the one to be viewed and the order changes. The Window Menu is also worse now listing menus in alphabetical order. Can the previous ordering be restored? (Happily Firefox still orders windows properly.)

I've been working with Snow Leopard since its beginnings and I haven't had any problem when leaving from www.hotmail.com, but 2 days ago when I logout I'm getting the message: "Sign out failed!" . The same happens with my wife's account.

Sites blocked in China still blocked on ...

Since I've returned to the US from China, where Facebook and Youtube have been blocked for months, I haven't able to access those sites from my macbook pro here at home. I've know there is no problem with the connection in my home, because I've tried accessing those sites on a other macs from my home simultaneously, and only had the connection problem from mine. Is it possible that some block got installed on my computer through servers in China? How can I resolve this problem? (I've already tried accessing the sites from different browsers- Safari and Firefox which I just installed here, with no luck).

I've tried loading the Apple Discussions page on several different Macs, and the Search Forum box is never rendered correctly. It looks like there is a search box inside a box, and looks ugly.

Whenever I load the youtube main page safari will load about half of it then freeze. Playing things on youtube is fine just cant open the main page. It also freezes when I try and play things on Hulu.

VERRRRRRY slow starting up 4.0.3 ...

I let Version 4.0.3 (4531.9) Safari update my last updated version some time back and have been living with what looks like a version of i tune in layout (I really could live without and have alphabetical sequences of bookmarks in it place) however, besides that, clicking its icon to open Safari sometimes takes a two sometimes three minute opening sequence.
It opens just like its predecessor and then beach balls around hogging other programs like mail from downloading

Flash Plug-in makes Safari ...

Earlier today, I wasn't having any issues, but in the past hour, Safari has been crashing/freezing every time I open a page with an video flash-plugin on it, for example the ad on the front page of YouTube.

I'm not really sure how to approach this; I cannot live without flash!

Problem: Safari not finding Apple Mail ...

I tried to send the contents of a web page and got the Safari message, "An email message can't be created because Safari can't find an email application." The issue is that I use Apple Mail, it is currently running and is successfully sending and receiving emails. I went into Mail Preferences and Mail is the default app. I'm using Mac OS 10.6.1, Safari 4.0.3 and Mail 4.1. Any ideas why Safari is not locating Mail? Thank you.

Remove History Items After One Day - ...

I've got Safari 4.0.3 running on Snow Leopard, and I've set "Remove history items" to "After one day".

The weird thing is, when I click on the History item in the menu bar, I've got 4 days of history listed! So Safari isn't obeying the "After One Day" preference.

Seeing Scrambled and Gibberish Texts in ...

I'm not sure how to explain this but here it goes:

I seem to be having a problem reading text from webpages that uses notepad-like software like GameFaqs.com and Ultimate-Guitar.com. Every time I open one of these walkthroughs or tabs I see nothing but gibberish. All the text are scrambled into nonsensical manner. I copied some of the text to TextEdit and I still see the scrambled mess but if I paste it in Microsoft Word, the words are ok.

I'm not sure if this is an OS problem or a software problem. Please somebody. Please tell me what's going on!

I was previously using Mozilla Firefox on a PC. I liked the function to save tabs. I recently got a Macbook, but I'm not sure whether to stick with Safari or download Firefox and just stick to what I know. I checked on google to see if I could find anything about saving Safari tabs, but just seemed to find something about non-Mac software which would let Safari save tabs. I don't think I want to get involved with all that?
Also debating whether to work out how to import an Outlook .pst file into (1) Entourage, or (2) Mail, or (3) wait for Outlook for Mac. When's that going to be available? I'm sick of using google mail online, and can't wait to get back to using Outlook or Mail or something similar. Any ideas or suggestions would be welcome.

Incredibly high CPU usage with Flash ...

Hi all,

I'm using Safari 4.0.3 with the last Flash Plugin version (10.0.32.18) that I just uninstalled and then reinstalled, and I got an incredibly high cpu usage while viewing an Youtube video.
Here is a screenshot of Activity monitor that shows you the percentage.

Sometimes the Safari process reach even 50% while the FlashPlugin one runs at 110%-120%.
Is that normal? With other browsers like Camino or Firefox, the CPU usage for the same video drops to 50%-60% max.

Every time I open safari in the past couple weeks, it will only go to one page, break.com and that is not my home page. If i type google or hotmail or facebook it will go to break.com, any website that i input in to the search bar will only go to break.com, is it a safari bug?

Safari Will Not Launch ...

I have Safari 4.0.3 on an eMac 700MHz PowerPC G4 and Safari will not launch. The icon bounces a while (26 times)no window appears, homepage blank, and then I get the "Quit unexpectedly" message. I tried things in other threads - removing certain files, repairing permissions, etc to no avail. Re-installed Security update 2009-002. Trashed and reinstalled all things Safari. Has gotten worse with successive Safari updates - only crashed occasionally before. Last few updates don't launch. Firefox also crashes almost daily. Opera(using now)has never crashed. Safari 4 no longer connects to Internet ...

The Software Update automatically installed Safari 4. Now, Safari 4 errors with "Safari can't connect to the server" regardless of what address (both alphanumeric and numeric) I type in and iTunes errors with "iTunes could not connect to the iTunes Store. The network connection was refused."

However, Firefox is able to access the World Wide Web and I'm still able to access files on my Windows computers on my network.

I've already:

1. Repaired permissions with Disk Utility
2. Tried Safari in a new user account
3. Removed the preferences file
4. Cleared the caches
5. Deleted .com.apple.safari.plist
6. Emptied the trash and restarted the computer

But it still cannot access the Internet. I don't see any option to uninstall Safari 4 and go back to Safari 3.

I ran normal software upgrade and upgraded to Safari 4.0.3.
Now I can't open safari from the Dock or from the Applications folder - I get a "the application Safari Quit unexpectedly" message.

I have tried to 'reopen' but that makes no difference.
I have restarted machine several times.
I have run the disk utility to repair permssions and this makes no difference.

Autofill list is impossible to clear ...

This is driving me nuts. I am trying to get Autofill to work correctly. As part of this I want to clear the list of 'User names and passwords'. None of them will delete. I have tried the following:

Clearing the cache
Resetting Safari
Deleting the safari.plist
Deleting the 'Safari Autofill' item in Keychain Access
Re-starting and re-launching Safari

The items are all still there.

Also, I cannot get Autofill to work on new websites. I am not presented with the pop-up window to allow me to save the passwords. Pop-ups are NOT blocked.

I'm running Safari 4.0.3 on Leopard

Everything works perfectly on Firefox! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Top Sites = Beach Ball of Death ...

Most of the time when I try to access facebook through the topsites, it causes Safari to stop responding and gives the beach ball of death. It occurred with my espn ffb page too, but facebook is more common.

Apple is just trying to make safari look like an iphone, but failed big time on this one. It's like Microsoft's blue screen of death, do you really want the same sort of association with the beach ball?

I belong to a forum. Since 7th November Safari doesnt recognise the site skins but defaults to a different site (completely unrelated and in a foreign language) for all skins except the default skin. Have no problem on other browsers, only Safari. I have performed all the usual things like emptied cache, cleared cookies and history and reset Safari, all to no avail. This behavior seems to be new, with Safari v4, that when it hangs (which seems more often than with v3, though I can't confirm this) I cannot Command Tab out of Safari to another application while it tries to figure out what to do. I have this uneasy feeling that Safari is quickly becoming non-compliant on my PPC iMac, or that the latest OS update (10.5.8) does not handle Safari as cleanly as before. Disappearing Tab Bar? ...

Hi

I got a new Mac and a fresh install of Snow Leopard. I don't remember this happening before in 10.5's Safari 4 so it might be 10.6 specific.

What happens is that occasionally when I open a new tab, the tab bar would still be hidden (like it is when there is only 1 tab). I can still navigate tabs using the menu but the bar itself isn't visible. Only way to get the bar to show up again is to restart Safari. Seems like a strange problem.

Anyone else had this?

Often, when I launch Safari, its window has moved from the position I previously set. This movement doesn't happen with Firefox. The Firefox window stays where I put it.

Other apps will run, but not if I try to access one of the troubled ones : for example, if I try to use my Address Book within Mail, mail will crash.

I have tried many of the suggestions posted elsewhere: rerunning the 10.6.1 update, uninstalling and reinstalling Flash, deleting files per the suggestion of users who have found that helpful, running fix privileges many times, and so on.

I will be grateful to learn if others have experienced these problems, if they have found ways to fix them, or if the experts listening might have some ideas.

Safari Not working with new CNN site, ...

Hello all, I keep getting this message when I try and play video on the new CNN site, "The video timed out attempting to play. Dragging tabs from tab bar issue in ...

Whenever I drag a tab out of the tab bar to make it open in a new window, it shows the window thumbnail and will not open in a new window (hangs up). Yes, I am letting go of the trackpad and it still does not work. I have tried removing the Safari plist and still no work. Any ideas?

Weird screen lines when clicking on top ...

This doesn't happen with every top site, but it does with a lot. when I click on one, I get a screen filled with weird vertical lines for a few seconds before the site appears. Other times, I get a strangely tiled screen. resetting top sites seems to help sometimes or briefly but never permanently.

Has anyone else had this experience and know of a cure?

Safari 4 "Webpage Preview Fetcher" ...

I just installed the new Safari 4 via Software Update Utility. Process called "Safari Webpage Preview Fetcher" is chewing up 50 - 75% of my CPU and isn't stopping. I've tried restarting Safari with no luck. Safari is basically unusable - I'm writing this from Firefox.

Any ideas?

Hi. Just wondering if anyone else has run into this problem and whether or not they have found a fix for it. Every time I try to print a web page to a pdf file from Safari (v4.0.3 running under Snow Leopard 10.6.1), Safari hangs and I have to force quit the program. The pdf is saved successfully, but the browser hangs immediately after the file has been created.

The problem is very consistent - every time I try to print a web page to a pdf file, the browser hangs. Anyone else have the same problem? Thanks.

Safari wont open at all ...

When clicking the Safari icon in the dock, Safari wont open at all. Mail works fine so connection to outside world is all fine and all other apps work fine. Safari just wont open. Any ideas would be very welcome please!!!!

Safari and Firefox crash constantly ...

For about a week, I've been having problems with both Safari and Firefox crashing. They crash any time I go on a page that involves a lot of loading. They crash when the entire page hasn't loaded and I click on something. It's beginning to get in the way of doing important things for school, like it crashed every time I tried to to view a page for a class. Help!

When working on eBay listings and on some other sites using Firefox, you are able to format your text using a bar over your text box. Much like the one I'm using now to enter this Topic. It allows you to enter text as bold, change it's color, insert bullets, etc. When using Safari, this bar is not shown. This problem is not limited to eBay. If this was a problem with site coding, I'd expect Firefox, etc. to have the same problem. They don't. So is there a problem with how Safari interprets certain text editing features? Is this feature completely missing from Safari?

A little constructive criticism if I may...

For ease of use, it seems to me that Firefox beats Safari hands-down in some areas.

One example - the bookmarks bar. On Safari, you click on a drop-down list of bookmarks, and if you want to move on to another you have to deselect the first one and click on the next one. Two clicks. On Firefox you just move your mouse over the next drop-down and it... drops down. Genius!

Another example. Want to re-order the items in a bookmark menu? With Safari you have to click on "show all bookmarks" then click on the relevant bookmark folder then the sub-folder (I keep my bookmarks in categories) then the bookmark itself and drag it to the new position... then you have to leave "show all bookmarks" to get back to browsing. On Firefox, you can re-order them from the drop-downs themselves by dragging. Simple!

As I'm using the latest version of everything on all 3 of my MacBook Pros, it must be Safari.

If any Safari developers read this, they are areas I'd recommend looking at!

Safari gets jammed quickly ...

I have a iMac G4 (Flat Panel) with Mac OS x (10.4.11). I have 148GB hard drive with 109GB available. I am noticing that Safari tends to slow up. Just outright jams when trying to go into another page. The "http:/" will be shaded light blue, but the rest just sits there. I then have to quit Safari, then "Force Quit" and restart.

Why is this happening? Very sluggish...

For some reason, once connected FTP through safari, it does not let me drag anything from or to the window that is open.

Is there a setting that I am missing or a parameter in the address bar that I forgot to add?

I have a large number of bookmarks organized in a series of hierarchial folders. In choosing "add a bookmark," is there a way to make these folders into collapsible folders instead of an interminably long list. The collapsible list is used in the bookmark drop-down menu, but NOT in the "add a bookmark" menu.

Hello, I hope someone can help. I'm having trouble with browsers - Firefox won't open and Safari crashes after a few moments (although it does get online). When I try and download firefox again the download crashes before finishing. I've tried all fixes I can find online (moving .plist, clearing cache etc) to no avail. I've had problems with Flash before but uninstalling hasn't helped. I've noticed something odd when opening certain files (not sure which now) associated with Safari - they open the contacts book, which seems odd. Crash log is below. Thanks in advance.

IP Camera functionality ...

I have two IP cameras (Trendnet ip422w) that use active X for two-way audio! (It seems all IP cameras use Active X for this feature) This is a great feature but I can only access it using the crap Internet Explorer in Windows? Why is there no ability to use this feature in Safari on my Mac? Is it even possible to have a camera with two-way audio using Safari on a mac? What would the camera need to for that feature to work using Safari? What would Safari need? I can't get an answer from the camera companies, other than we are not working on that. Is it impossible? Is this a technological feat that only Microsoft can conquer? And No I don't want to do it in Boot Camp ... I'm sick of Microsoft! I want my Mac to do it! I want my iPhone to do it! *** is the problem?

I'm one of the folks who has been experiencing this inexplicable hanging/not loading web pages and slower connection since I upgraded to Snow Leopard and the new Safari.

I did this DNS thing, which is fine, I understand what it means -
but I never had to do that before, and so I don't understand why I have to do it now, and why isn't my clever computer doing it automatically?
My 67 year old mother would never have known this if I didn't come along and fix it! LOL
So is this something that will be incorporated in a future update so people like my mother don't have to be so savvy, or is this the kind of thing we have to keep doing as new things get added?

Is this the only thing that is making my Safari hang on some websites that weren't hanging before all the new updates? Is there some other reason? I've done nothing new to my connection, it's the same DSL as before, and my ISP seems to show no problems at all.

continued Safari ISA issues ...

I continue to have major issues with Safari and ISA 2006 making it practically unusable in a ISA enviroment.

Our major issues are.

Safari has no SSO passthrough making users have to type in their credidentials every single time. This is a glaring issue as Apple toutes Active Directory support yet does not support proxy authetication through Safari unlike every other Mac browser out there.

Even with authentication, Safari will refuse to open SHTTP websites. Again a MAJOR issue.

For the time being we are using Firefox which works, but it basically eliminates any control we could have had over safari and proxy settings via Workgroup Manager. I have contacted Apple about this a bunch of times but no one seems to even know what ISA is never mind how this could be a serious issue in a school or buisnes environment.

Any suggestions?

Mysterious downloads in 4.0.3 ...

Hello, has anyone encountered this:

Since downloading the latest Safari 4.0.3 update, when I am visiting a website, well, it seems to only be isolated to the USA Today website that I have found, but when I click to read a story, that new page loads, but after a moment or so, the Downloads window appears showing that it is downloading a 'Desktop-#-1' (the # is a sequential number that has started at 1, but with each new mysterious download, increases by one... I'm now at 'Desktop-9-1'), but nothing really seems to have been downloaded, nothing appears on my desktop, nor a Finder window opening up displaying anything. Plus, after one 'downloads', it's only a moment later, that another download commences, and this may occur up to three times in a row (like I wrote above, each additional download's name increases sequentially, so that the latest reads 'Desktop-9-1').

I am concerned about this and naturally am worried about what it is that is somehow, and somewhere, being downloaded onto my computer. Anyone else encountered this or know what it is all about?

Safari crashes 100% of the time when ...

All the time when composing a new message or in reply to a message in the Facebook email system Safari locks-up, has the spinning rainbow beachball of death and crashes. And when it crashes it just disappears like I never had it running. No crash window, no crash report, just becomes inactive in the dock.

This happens 100% of the time in Facebook when doing messages in the in-box. Others have also told me this has happened to them. I resort to using Firefox which works fine. This was happening in the last builds of Safari 3.x and continues in Safari 4.x (I'm currently using Safari 4.0.3 (5531.9).

Doesn't matter if I've repaired permissions or not, I've got plenty of free memory, got a fast MacBook Pro.

Anybody out there have this same problem? Can I get a witness?

Recording Internet radio programs ...

Could you recommend software that records streamed internet radio programs. It would great if it can be programmed to record in the middle of the day while I am at work. It does not need to be free as long it works and comes with a good track record.

animated gif won't work in safari ...

I put an animated gif in iWeb and it runs fine in the site in Windows IE 7 and Firefox 3.5, and on my Mac in Firefox, But you can just see the initial frame in Safari.
Actually I put two on there, the little flag works (has a transparent layer over it to make it clickable), but the bigger one, with 13 layers, does not.

Is there something in Safari that I need to set?

When I go to view a page of text, or open a text file in Safari 4.03, all I see are what appear to be random characters scattered over the page. I'm assuming that Safari is having a problem of some kind with these files, but don't seem to be able to clear it up. I'm not trying to download the files, merely view them.

I am trying to drive a musical production from a local html file of the script (text of the play), with links to local mp3 files. Now, Safari brings up a QuickTime window to replace the script window. This makes it hard to follow the script to see when it's time to pause the mp3, etc. How can I configure Safari to play the mp3s in a separate window?
